How To Create A Well-Designed Office Space At Home

With the novel virus pandemic, our world is changing before our eyes and many of us are now confined to working from home to stay safe as a community and country. Those who were already working from home have probably aced the home office environment routine and are doing just fine, while most of us who are new to this are taking baby steps to fit into the home-office zone. With this new regime, we may sometimes feel exhausted, bone tired, groggy, distracted, and feel anxious about the insecurities of being unproductive. To rule out all these, we have solutions on how to design your home office space and be successful.

1.  Choose Your Designated Work Space
Among other things, first and foremost, the biggest decision you will have to make is designating a place to work. If you're planning to sit at a kitchen or breakfast counter or maybe even in the living room, make sure that there is less traffic of people walking around, less human contact, less noise and less distraction, because the last thing you want is to be interfered every 5 minutes. This might require you to change the room or re-arrange a space so that your work environment is conducive to productivity. So choose a place that is less likely to hinder your work and this will make you mentally prepared for work when you enter it.

2. Choosing The Right Furniture For Work
When you sit for work, the chair and the table you choose will play a predominant role in your work environment. Don't just go for looks, but choose wisely based on your comfort level. Anything you opt, make sure it is ergonomic, functional, comfortable, supports your lumbar region, not too slouchy, but cosy enough to keep you relaxed. The tables usually have a certain height, but when it comes to the chair, pick something that allows you to adjust the height. This means your legs shouldn't be hanging when you're sitting on a chair, but instead should be resting on the floor. The table height shouldn't disturb your elbow posture or resting your arms on the desk. Hence, choosing the right furniture will determine the work efficiency.

Ask yourself: Are you comfortable?

3. Prioritise Good Lighting
Lighting can also be determined much earlier when you choose to plan the place to work. If you've chosen a space next to the window, then natural light will illuminate your space and the cool breeze will induce productivity. If you don't have the luxury of finding a place right next to the window, make sure to illuminate your space with a light fixture or a bulb. Lighting has a major impact on productivity, especially for those whose work requires staring at a laptop or computer. You can also opt for LED lighting, because it creates clean, comfortable light without glare and is energy-efficient. Therefore, lighting is the key because it determines several aspects like mood, energy, focus and productivity.

4. Add Personality To Your Space
It’s no secret that productivity is increased when your mind is happy. So make space for terrarium, vases, books, candles and pieces of art to elevate your mood levels. Add things that cater to your taste or makes you feel inspired. Since we can't step outdoors, bring the outdoors in with desk plants or floor plants. Research has shown that exposure to nature and greenery increases a person's mood, happiness and productivity while reducing stress. Bringing in the greens is a great way to add a breath of fresh air to your workspace and create some visual variety when your eyes need a break from the screen. Apart from a nice table lamp, pen stand, calendar and clock, add posters, sticky notes, photo frames, craft and such things that define your personality.

5. De-Clutter
Keep only the necessary things on your table, the rest can be transported to your bookshelf or chest of drawers where you can skim through them effortlessly. Those files, extra books, piles of paper lying around your desk are probably not important for the day, shift them to a place where you can access them easily. Starting your work day with a cluttered table can psychologically increase stress, sap energy, and lower productivity. It may make you feel like there's so much to do, but so less time. So keep your table and work space tidy, minimal, and clutter-free.
