Ancestree: an art installation at Designuru 3.5

Between the 5th and 7th of December 2022, Simply Sofas showcased an art installation titled ANCESTREE at Bangalore International Centre – the venue for the 7th edition of Designuru, the annual design festival of the Institute of Indian Interior Designers and part of the month-long Bengaluru Design Festival. The theme for this year was ‘Local, Social, Sustainable,’ based on which the installation was conceived and made in collaboration with leading architectural firm PRAXIS and brand design firm OpusCDM.

THE CONCEPT

ANCESTREE presents the future as an opportunity, originating from a deep-seated regard for Mother Nature – to revive, rebuild, and regrow this legacy. It is an affirmation of hopeful action, not just for those present, but for those yet to come. A responsibility, a moment of judgement of the species. As in the words of Luisah Teish, "We are the ancestors of the future and what we do now will have an impact."

THE MAKING

From concept to execution, all in a span of 2 weeks, the making of ANCESTREE featured the coming together of more than a hundred objects – reused and repurposed – worked on by over a dozen hands. The holistic structure, erected thereof, bore a singular message that in the words of those who visited was intriguing, thought-provoking and meaningful.

THE ELEMENTS, THE METAPHORS

At its very core, ANCESTREE is a summation of its elements – the juxtaposition of them. Each a metaphor, and together a message.

The Chair – the seat of the future, an invitation to not just sit and understand, but do.

The Television – the channel: New Life, the programme: Revival of the Planet for Our Gen-next.

The Cracked Earth – devoid of water and life, but there's a glimmer of hope with the newborn.

The Wall of Crates – the defining issues and threats we face. The boxes of our follies, the ego of our species, the damage, the warning signs, the causes, the effects.

The Glass Baubles – of seeds, soil, fauna, and keys. For the answers and the means are obvious and transparent.

As in continuation with the theme of the event, ANCESTREE is now on display as a ‘frozen memory’ at the Simply Sofas Mekhri Circle showroom.
