The Evolution of the Grand Living Room

With its plush sectional sofas, leather armchairs, accent tables, cushions and lighting, the grand living room is a stunning showcase of contemporary design and elegant sophistication. It has, though, come a long way since its inception in European aristocratic houses and palaces of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Having evolved from the design aesthetics of the late Renaissance period, the Baroque and Rococo eras witnessed the rapid proliferation of the ‘parlour’ – a formal space used for entertaining guests, which was often the most lavishly decorated room in the house. It typically featured ornate architectural details such as high ceilings, large windows, and elaborate mouldings, as well as luxurious furnishings such as chandeliers, paintings, and sculptures. It was only during the 19th century though that the concept of the grand living room would spread to other parts of the world as a symbol of wealth and social status.

As the decades went by, the grand living room evolved to become the central hub of the home. It was no longer just a space for special occasions, but rather a place for the entire family to gather, relax, and spend time together. It became the heart of the home, a place where families could connect and bond. In the words of eminent English designer Terence Conran, “The living room should be a place where we feel totally at ease – temple of the soul.”

Living room with home office

In recent times, the grand living room has taken on a new level of importance, becoming a multi-functional space that can accommodate a variety of activities. For instance, many people are now using their formal living rooms as a home office, setting up desks and other equipment to work remotely. From a décor and design perspective, there has also been a shift towards more comfortable and functional furniture. Homeowners are now opting for plush recliner sofas and chairs that are comfortable for long periods of sitting, as well as tables and desks that can be used for work and study. Elements like throw pillows, blankets, and plants are also being added to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

While the grand living room may have evolved in its representation through furniture elements, materials, textures, lighting, and colour palettes, its core purpose seems to have remained unchanged. That of it being an exemplar of good taste and a reflection of the homeowner's personality. A space that exudes class and refinement, making it the perfect place to entertain guests or simply relax and unwind with family and friends.
